Every year, SAWIS publishes a report card on how well has Asia been drinking. See here. I am glad to report that Singapore has been drinking South African wines consistently. Beating the likes of Hong Kong, Malaysia and on par with South Korea.
China has seen a tremendous drop in consumption, reasons being part politics and part consumption trends. Japan on the other hand has seen a steady increase, despite limited marketing budgets.
How do we plug the gap left by China. How will governing bodies react and what actions will they undertake? Very intriguing questions for 2025.
Focusing the lens back to Singapore: The reduction in white wines consumed, has inversely seen an increase by the same amount of reds consumed YoY from 2023. Not surprising Cabernet Sauvignon still leads the way for reds. It is intriguing to find that Chenin Blanc is still lagging behind it's fellow peers.
Projected to be the rising star, Chenin blanc has taken front and centre stage for most marketing campaigns.
Yet Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, traditional powerhouse whites still command a sizeabout amount of hearts locally.
The last graph leaves us without little doubt the malaise that has set into the F&B industry. The diminishing consumption trend reflects the industry as a whole. Though in Singapore we are blessed and fortunate that the volume has held steady in 2024.
