Rim

The rim of the wine glass facilitates the interaction between wine and tongue. The thinner the rim, the easier the flow of wine from glass to mouth. The rim of the wine glass is also the most delicate portion, hence optimal care must be taken when washing the glass. The most expensive glasses often feature amazing sheered rims.

Bowl

The bowl of the wine glass should be wide enough to hold copious amounts of wine. The width of the bowl allows a larger surface area of wine to react with air. This reaction releases aromatic compounds which brings about the beautiful bouquet. The bowl of the wine glass is often tapered with different angles for different varietals.

Different glass makers have different interpretation when it comes to tapering. Resulting in a myriad of glasses, each with its USP.

Stem

The stem plays a role in maintaining the temperature of the glass. While glass is not the fastest transmitter of heat, the stem mitigates by directing any unwanted heat away. The length and width of the stem should allow a person's hand to grasp it comfortably. Delicate stems give a feel of prestige.

Base

Provides the stability of the wine glass.
